How to Fix PS5 DualSense Stick Drift (Easy Methods)

Before you start: Test your Drift

What is Stick Drift?

Stick drift occurs when the DualSense controller registers movement or input from the analog sticks even when you aren't touching them. This causes your camera to spin or your character to walk automatically. It is usually caused by wear and tear on the potentiometer sensors (the parts that read the stick's position) or dust accumulating inside the mechanism.

Warning: Opening your controller's plastic shell involves unscrewing it, which will void your manufacturer's warranty. We recommend trying Method 1 and 2 before opening the device.

Method 1: The "No-Open" Cleaning (Safest)

Dust and dead skin particles can fall into the gap between the joystick ball and the controller housing, interfering with the sensors. This is the most common cause of minor drift.

Tools Needed:

Steps:

  1. Clean the Base: Dip a cotton swab in a small amount of Isopropyl Alcohol. Gently clean the spherical base of the analog stick. Move the stick around to ensure you clean the entire surface where it enters the controller body.
  2. Air Burst: Press the analog stick to the side to create a gap. Use the compressed air can (keep it upright to avoid spraying liquid) to blow short bursts into the gap.
  3. Rotate: Rotate the stick in circles (360 degrees) for 10-15 seconds. Repeat the air bursts on different sides.
  4. Dry: Wait 5 minutes for any alcohol to evaporate before turning the controller on.

Method 2: Hard Reset the Controller

Sometimes, drift is caused by a software calibration error rather than physical damage. A hard reset restores the factory default calibration.

  1. Turn off your PS5 console.
  2. Disconnect the DualSense controller from the USB cable.
  3. Locate the small reset hole on the back of the controller (next to the Sony logo).
  4. Insert a paperclip or SIM ejector tool into the hole. You should feel a small button click.
  5. Hold the button down for 5 seconds.
  6. Reconnect the controller via USB to the PS5 and press the PS button to re-pair it.

Method 3: Adjust Deadzones (Software Fix)

If the physical repair doesn't work, you can mitigate the issue using software settings. Most modern games (like Call of Duty, Fortnite, Apex Legends) have a "Deadzone" setting.

A Deadzone is the area around the center of the stick where input is ignored. Increasing the deadzone tells the game to ignore the slight drift movement.

Method 4: Warranty Claim

If you purchased your PS5 or DualSense controller within the last year, it is likely covered by Sony's warranty. Drift is a known defect and is usually covered for free repair or replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fix drift permanently?

Not always. Potentiometers wear out over time physically. Cleaning fixes it temporarily if dust is the issue, but physical wear requires replacing the entire joystick module (requires soldering).

Is WD-40 safe for controllers?

No! Standard WD-40 is oil-based and will ruin the electronics. Only use "WD-40 Specialist Contact Cleaner" which is designed for electronics and dries without residue.

How long does a DualSense usually last?

According to teardown analysis, the potentiometers are rated for about 2,000,000 cycles. For a heavy gamer (2+ hours a day of FPS games), drift can appear within 4 to 7 months.
